Why can't I upgrade the security component in OverDrive Media Console (the upgrade button is grayed out)?

This one is a real pain.  You checked out a download audiobook  in WMA format from the library and you try to download using OverDrive and you get this message:

You need to update a "security" component in Windows Media Player.  Other sites had various suggestions. I keyed in on the link to this site.

But upon arrival the  "Upgrade" button was grayed out.  So I followed these instructions:

1.    Launch Internet Explorer (I used the Run As Administrator) option
(instead of left clicking on IE, Right click, then select Run As Administrator--here's a picture)

2.    Select Tools from the top menu, and click Internet Options.

3.    In the panel that pops up, select the Security tab.

4.    Uncheck the option for “Enable Protected Mode (requires restarting Internet Explorer)”

5.    Click Apply, OK, and close the Internet Explorer browser.

6.    Restart Internet Explorer and go to the address http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp.

7.    The  Upgrade button should now be operational.





But it wasn't. So I went back to the Tools Menus and in there I selected the following:

8. Go to tools, Compatibility view. (puts a check mark beside it)

That didn't work either, so I also added a check mark for:
9. Go to tools, Activex filtering

And that did work!


So I thought I'd pass it on.

Getting Zune to Drop Those Old Podcasts

This post is really about the Zune program on the computer rather than the Zune HD Player itself.

Let's say you subscribe to a podcast, and you really don't want or need to keep those really old sessions. You've already deleted them from the Zune HD, but you have to scroll through them on Zune to get to the current ones.

You thought you'd get it to work by going into the folder and deleting the old MP3's, but lo and behold when you went back to Zune, there they were but now instead of stating, for example this:

It states this instead:

And when you click on "Download", you get a can't find it or similar message. So how do you get rid of these things?

The answer lies in the "Zune Media Reset Collection Tool"!  You download this exe program from the web and run it.  It essentially goes through your Zune files and dumps the ones it can't find, while leaving your other stuff alone. It wasn't the easiest thing to find, but at least it is what you need.  Here's where to find it.

The tool works by erasing the locations for your podcasts and collections, then going back and rereading all the folders you'd designated as having appropriate files. So don't panic when it first states "collection not found" or similar.

Unreal...it's gone from the link above. Here's some info about the tool...run it with Zune closed. When you finish, open up Zune and you'll see the program go searching for all the current data.

Podcasts and How to Manage 'em

Well, I subscribe to a podcast and Zune seems to take great advantage of that.

To set it up, first in the software I clicked on "settings" (on top of the screen towards the right), then for "podcasts" down the left column. From there I selected:
a. All episodes
b. Oldest episodes first

I decided that if I went new to old on episodes, I would be constantly clicking down the screen on Zune. And I picked "all episodes" because I wanted new ones to always download, and not shut off just because I hadn't listened the last week or so.

To set up the actual podcast , I went to the software section and selected "Podcast". In the lower left is


When I clicked on that I had to enter the location of the podcast (rss...etc.) and then the usual id/password for the podcast. That kicked it off. Episodes began downloading to my computer to the default location. When I hooked up the Zune, it began to download the episodes to the Zune. Also back on the software section I checked the "series settings" (lower right) and made sure it was set to:
"Sync all unplayed and partially played episodes". This allowed for the downloads to take place automagically once they'd been placed on my computer. Both audio and video podcasts automatically downloaded--


After awhile I ended up with a lot of "extra" episodes--these were when the usual host went on vacation. I found a quick way to delete the extra episodes (note these do not delete them from the computer, or in the Zune software on the computer).
What you do is when you have the list of podcast episodes in the Zune HD, touch the Zune until the episode line "lights up", and you will see (before and after):

Then just select "Delete" and the next time you sync, that episode will be gone. Not bad!

Seemed quite a bit simpler than the ITunes instructions for the podcast:
